My Story

My journey into the world of online business began in the fall of 2017. I was a third grade student teacher, only two months away from graduating. It took me eight years to get to this point, and I was ready to be done with school for good. It was an exciting time for me, but not for the reasons you might think.

There are many things I love about teaching, and ever since I was little, I thought I would grow up to be an elementary school teacher. My mom wrote me a letter in the fourth grade for a time capsule we made, and we couldn’t open it until the year we graduated from high school. She wrote:

“I have dreams of you becoming successful in whatever you do. You show interest in becoming a teacher. I just want you to know that this is the hardest job and most rewarding.”

My mom was a teacher. She had an undeniable affinity for children that she passed down to me. She was right, teaching is hard. I knew it would be challenging, but I didn’t fully understand how all-consuming the job was until I started student teaching. I knew I had to get used to bringing my work home with me, but I didn’t realize how it would affect me over time. Finding a work-life balance was tough. I could see myself teaching for the next ten, maybe fifteen years, but at what cost. I decided that my time would be better spent figuring out my next move and I would substitute teach for the time being. A lot happened in the years leading up to this that made the decision easier than you might expect.

In the summer of 2012, my mom was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. I’m sort of a loner today because those years would change me in ways no one will ever understand. She passed away on September 22, 2014. For the next four years, I lived day to day, didn’t look forward to anything and had zero motivation to change the trajectory of my life. My relationship with my family was tense. I wasn’t excited about teaching and had no backup plan. I was in a depression.

Sometime in 2017, YouTube started recommending videos to me on ways to make money online, and it led me down a rabbit hole of possibility I thought was either too good to be true or not many people knew about. The first videos I watched were about Amazon FBA. I knew what Amazon was obviously. What I didn’t know was that there were third-party sellers on the platform, that anyone can sell products. Not only that, but you can send your products into Amazon and they’ll handle shipping and customer service for you. My mind was blown. I started reimagining my whole future and what this could mean for me. It meant being able to work for myself, set my own schedule, work from home or anywhere in the world, and have control over my earning potential. I was going to make it work no matter what. I spent weeks watching Jungle Scout videos, learning how it all works and in the spring of 2018, I launched my first product. Since then, I’ve sold thousands of products across multiple online marketplaces including eBay and Etsy. I’ve tried different business models like private label, retail arbitrage, online arbitrage, and dropshipping, and some I had more success with than others. I’ve made more mistakes than I can remember and learned a ton along the way and I hope to pass that knowledge on in this blog.

We hear it all the time. Life is short. It’s not that deep but it’s so true. Maybe it’s just me but it feels like the years are speeding up as I get older. I’m 31 now, and it especially hits me when I say it out loud. I’m starting to think about my parents when they were my age. In four years, I’ll be the same age my mom was when she was first diagnosed with cancer. She was only 47 when she died. Two years later, her sister and my aunt, who was the next closest thing to a mom, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was 53 when she died last year. Life is hard enough to be spending it doing anything you don’t want to. It’s not that I’m passionate about making money online. What drives me is what it can do for my life. I want to spend more time with my loved ones. I want to travel for weeks, maybe even months at a time. I want to volunteer abroad and make friends in other parts of the world. Making money online gives me the freedom and peace of mind to do more of what I want. That’s what keeps me going.

Cheers,

Moody
